Modern CISO Network: Board Book

Robert Maughan is an experienced security leader, currently serving as the Deputy CISO for University College London (UCL). He provides leadership to a team covering all aspects of information security across the university, from advice and awareness to incident management and security testing.

The quality of its research and education regularly sees UCL placed as one of the top ten universities in the world. The value of this research, coupled with the vast amount of personal information required to track the staff, students and alumni of the UK’s largest university make UCL a tempting target. Robert has extensive experience balancing the conflicting priorities involved in supporting world changing research on a constrained budget while collaborating with institutions across the globe and fending off a wide variety of hostile groups.

Prior to finding an organisation that matched his passion for learning and addressing the challenges that face the world today, Robert worked as a security consultant. He consulted for a variety of UK central government clients, the NHS and emergency services as well as in highly regulated industries. He started his consultancy career installing network security equipment in data centres and finished it as the technical design authority for a security refresh for an entire government department.
